Last weekend we headed to the ancient city of Nara with our friends Lindsey and Jonathan to see the first day of the summer light festival. We hiked up, Wakakusayama, a small mountain, and found ourselves a completely different side of the tourist city. Having the hillside practically to ourselves we enjoyed the cooler breezes, played frisbee and watched the sun set, wishing we had had the forethought to pack a bottle of wine and a picnic. And, of course, we frolicked. Being on an open ridge invites a certain amount of levity. After watching the beautiful sunset we headed down to enjoy the lights set up around Nara Park - meant to guide the spirits of the recently deceased on to a better place - before rushing to catch our train home.
